Brunswick Heads

22-Jan-2011
Despite the ever-increasing popularity of this stretch of coast, Brunswick Heads has remained almost unchanged, very much a traditional, relaxed and unpretentious coastal town.  Situated on the south bank of the mouth of the Brunswick River, 15 minutes from Byron Bay, 2 hours from Brisbane and 11 hours' drive from Sydney, with 8 km unspoiled white sandy beaches and a backdrop of coastal heath, making it a great destination for camping (three waterside parks to choose from), bicycle riding, surfing, fishing, kayaking and other water sports.  Brunswick Heads promotes itself using the "Simple Pleasures" attitude focusing on family fun.

January is the time for the Festival of the Fish & Chips which includes a Fishing Competition and a Woodchop Carnival for men, women and juniors, with an enormous fireworks display that heralds the start of the festival on the Brunswick Heads waterfront.  The Old and Gold Festival is held on the June long weekend, an all-town garage sale and second-hand fair, and sometime in November is the the Kites & Bikes Festival. Community markets are on the first Saturday of each month.

With a local fishing fleet, fresh seafood is the order of the day at many of the alfresco cafes, restaurants or direct from the Fisherman's Co-op.  Join the throng for lunch and listen to the music at the Art Deco-style Hotel Brunswick in it's massive beer garden surrounded by shady trees and views of the river.  If you want to catch your own fish, throw a line in off the walkway along the river bank or from the groin walls protecting the entrance to the river, surf beach fishing, hire a boat and explore the beautiful Brunswick River, or if you are after the big ones, hire a fishing charter boat to go outside.

Created in 1979 and covering 220 hectares, Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve forms a vital stepping stone for migrating birds.  Species from north and south-east Australia overlap here, providing unusually diverse plant and animal communities.  Take a short bicycle ride or drive over the bridge and turn right into Oyster Lease Road for an enjoyable day of fishing and relaxation with a quiet picnic at the day use area.  Driving further through Ocean Shores to New Brighton and  south down North Head Road to the carpark, take a 300 metre stroll through rare coastal (littoral) rainforest onto the breakwater of the north bank of the Brunswick River where there is excellent swimming.  Two short tracks from this carpark also take you to the ocean beach or to mangrove-lined Marshalls Creek, where you can enjoy a paddle at mid to high tide.

The Brunswick Valley stretches from the beautiful sparkling beaches of Brunswick Heads, New Brighton, South Golden Beach and Tyagarah along the Brunswick River to the picturesque town of Mullumbimby  and the numerous surrounding villages beyond to the lush upper reaches of the escarpment.  Striking scenic drives into the hinterland provide the perfect way to spend a day away from the beach.  Visitors and locals alike enjoy the natural beauty and comfortable climate of this unique area.
