Evans Head

08-Nov-2010

Aah, Evans Head!  A “Jewel in the Crown” of the Richmond Valley, this peaceful coastal fishing village is located on the banks of Evans River.  Bounded by long unspoiled beaches and two magnificent National Parks the natural beauty of Evans Head and surrounds is breathtaking.  In Spring the rich heaths of the Broadwater National Park erupt in colour as a sea of wildflowers attracts an astonishing abundance of birdlife.  To the south of the village the Bundjalung National Park is a nature lover’s paradise with 4WD access to vast, unspoiled beaches and fantastic bushwalks.  You can even paddle a canoe/kayak down the pristine and tranquil Esk River.

There are plenty of reasons why people are attracted to Evans Head with the Caravan Park (one of the largest in NSW) right on the river and next to the surf, having plenty of shade and access to the town’s facilities.  You can park your car when you arrive and not drive till you leave!  How good is that?
Enjoying the beaches is the major past time here for visitors.  Serious surfers ride the swell around Goanna Headland while the main beach (Life Saver patrolled during the summer months) and shallow beaches along the river estuary are great for kids and other swimmers.  Rock, beach or ocean fishing is popular, as is dolphin or whale spotting from the groin walls or up Razorback Lookout with views to Cape Byron Lighthouse on a clear day.  The kids also enjoy the skate park and riding their bikes along the many paths throughout the village.

The first commercial prawning port in Australia was right here in Evans Head and there are still good catches of school and king prawns today made by the local fishing fleet.  If outside fishing is what you want there is a charter-boat, or there are two boat ramps to put your own boat in.  These are set up with fish cleaning and boat washing facilities available.  With all this fishing going on you cannot go past a feed of fish & chips while overlooking the river, or maybe a flavoured ice-cream is more your style!

Events held in Evans Head include the Fishing Classic in July, Triathlon in September, Longboard International in September, Great Eastern Flyin in December/January and the Community Markets are held on the 4th Saturday of every month.
