Tweed Valley

01-Mar-2011

The Tweed Heads region, offers a stunningly beautiful mix of unspoilt natural experiences and attractions, world class entertainment facilities, historic villages and art and cultural treasures.  The Tweed has a warm sub-tropical climate, abounds with rich bio-diverse rainforests and has majestic Mt Warning, known as Wollumbin (meaning Cloud Catcher by the local aboriginal community - Bundjalung people) is the remnant core of the largest extinct shield volcano in the southern hemisphere and the second largest in the world.

World Heritage Listed National Parks circle the rim of the old crater - Lamington, Border Ranges, Nightcap and Springbrook - and Australia's largest remnant of subtropical rainforest blankets the ridges creating a unique micro-environment for rare birds, endangered animals and the bright blue crayfish.  Camping is available at some of these National Parks or nearby at private parks to give you an opportunity to experience the natural wonders of Australia's Great Outdoors from first song of the birds in the morning to lights out at night.  There are a number of accessible graded walking tracks throughout these parks but the ultimate challenge is the 4.4km hike to the summit of Mt Warning, where the rising suns's rays first touch mainland Australia.  The Tweed Range Scenic Drive, taking you into the Border Ranges National Park west of Murwillumbah, features spectacular rainforests, unforgettable vistas of Mt Warning and the caldera, waterfalls, sparkling creeks and rugged ridges.  The vastness of the caldera, the mosaic of farmlands and the deep green of the rainforest stand out against the spire of Mount Warning (Wollumbin).  Short walks at Brindle Creek and Bar Mountain picnic areas add to the experience.  The Antarctic Beech picnic area has views over the Lost World Wilderness.  A highlight is the view from the Pinnacle Lookout on the rim of the great caldera.  At 919 metres above sea level, the view is absolutely breathtaking.  To stand on the rim of the caldera is to experience one of Australia's most breathtaking natural wonders.

The Tweed Coast's 37kms of unspoiled uncrowded beaches are broken only by tranquil villages.  There are top surfing spots as well as beach and rock fishing locations while the seaside villages from Fingal to Wooyung have ideal family beaches with numerous Caravan Parks right next to the beach for your Outdoor Living Vacation.  Scuba Dive or Snorkel some of the coast's best locations to see magnificent marine life, or join an offshore fishing charter for some deep-sea action.  Cook Island off Fingal Head has a varied marine life resulting from the warm east-Australian current from the north converging with cooler currents from the south. Temperate, subtropical and tropical species of fish, crustaceans and molluscs are found around the island (they are all protected in this area).  Cudgen Creeks (there are two) are great for kayaking, fishing, bird watching, and crabbing.  Sea turtles have been recorded nesting on the beach of Cudgen Nature Reserve and a small population of koalas inhabits the forest around the lake and the Round Mountain area.  The lake, coastal rainforest and heathland offer a safe wintering spot for birds, bats and flying foxes.

Identified as being in the top ten of the most desirable places to live in Australia, the picturesque township of Murwillumbah is located in the centre of the stunning Tweed Valley on the far north coast of New South Wales, just 15 minutes from the pristine beaches of the Tweed coast, 30 minutes south of the Gold Coast and 40 minutes north of Byron Bay.  Watched over by the awe inspiring majesty of Mt Warning, and surrounded by 5 World Heritage National Parks, the countryside around Murwillumbah is a blend of rolling green hills and gently flowing rivers, punctuated with pockets of sugar cane, banana plantations, hobby farms and small village communities.

Cast a line into the picturesque Tweed River or try your hand at crabbing.  The Tweed's estuaries also offer great fishing all year and the calm waters of the Terranora Inlet have abundant bird and aquatic life.  Take a relaxing river cruise and see the birdlife on Stotts Island.  Charters and boat hire facilities are also available.  A variety of entertainment and accommodation for all ages and interests is on offer; world-class clubs with dancing and dining, environmental theme parks, family holiday parks, beach-side and river stopovers.  Taste rare and delicious locally grown tropical fruits and delight in the regions's many quaint cafes and range of fine cuisine.
