Woody Head

07-Aug-2010

We recently set up a camp for a group of friends at beautiful Woody Head Camping
Area on the coast just north of Iluka which is on the Clarence River in Northern NSW.
The Clarence River is one of Australia’s most majestic waterways covering more
than 400km from the rugged mountains in the west to the rich heathlands and pristine
beaches at Iluka and Yamba in the East.  Woody Head Camping Area is set in Bundjalung National Park with a high level of facilities for a National Park i.e. hot showers and a kiosk.  It’s protected location and the calm waters of Woody Bay
make it a favourite with families, you do need to book at school holiday times.  Dad
can launch his boat from their ramp or fish from the large rock platform headland,
you and your children can swim and snorkel looking at the myriad of colourful marine
life, and just play in the sun and relax.  I hear Snapper & Taylor are biting and a nice
feed of whiting can be caught off the beach at the moment.

Just north of Woody Head Camping Area is the vehicle beach access at Shark Bay
and just south Iluka Bluff offers a great surf break and lookout for whale-watching.
Iluka Nature Reserve is part of the Gondwanna Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area with a large patch of littoral coastal rainforest and over 100 resident
bird species including the spectacular Regent Bower Bird.

Iluka Village is serviced by three caravan parks, a golf course, a pub overlooking the
river, great fish & chips from the Fisherman’s Co-Op, three boatramps, a sea wall to
fish from or just walk along and try and spy a turtle coming up for air or playful
dolphins swimming by and when you look up there’s always a plethora of birds, too
many varieties to mention here, and a ferry that plies the river to Yamba and back frequently.

I am hoping for a fine day when we return to pull down the camp and go for a snorkel
in 200
C water, mmmmm.
